As summer travel ramps up, several major Interstate highway projects are scheduled to begin or continue over the next four weeks. Whether you’re a daily commuter,, shipping expedited freight or planning a road trip, here’s what you need to know:

Interstate 5 (I‑5) – California

Caltrans is set to begin night-time repaving operations between Sacramento and Stockton starting July 15. Crews will close one lane in each direction nightly from 9 PM to 5 AM. Drivers can expect delays of 10–15 minutes; construction is slated to wrap up by August 5.

I‑95 Widening – Florida

Beginning July 20, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) starts a major widening project on I‑95 between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The southbound side will add an additional express lane over 12 miles. Expect daytime partial closures and variable speed zones until early September, with typical 15–20 minute delays during peak hours.

I‑70 Bridge Replacement – Colorado

Across the Rocky Mountains, Colorado DOT is replacing a deteriorating bridge on I‑70 near Georgetown, beginning July 22. This is a major engineering effort: the old bridge will be demolished, and a new multi-span structure erected. Traffic shifts to detour lanes; expect lane reductions and occasional full closures. Estimated completion: August 18.

I‑80 Seismic Retrofit – Utah

Utah DOT kicks off a seismic strengthening project on I‑80 east of Salt Lake City, starting July 25. Purpose: to reinforce key overpasses against earthquake risk. Crews will work nights with one lane closed; expect 10–12 min delays. The project will wrap up by August 30.

I‑10 Drainage Improvements – Texas

Continuing into July, TxDOT begins drainage and culvert upgrades on I‑10 near San Antonio on July 18. Work extends over a 6‑mile stretch with shoulder closures and periodic single‑lane traffic. Estimated delay: up to 8 minutes. The job is expected to finish about August 8.

What Drivers Should Do

In May 2025, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) reported a 0.1% decline in its seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index. While seemingly modest, this decrease continues a concerning trend: year-over-year tonnage dropped 1.4%, marking the twelfth straight month of annual declines. As the freight market navigates a prolonged period of softness, it’s worth asking—what does this downturn signal for trucking companies, shippers, and the broader economy?

The ATA’s Chief Economist Bob Costello noted that while tonnage was “essentially unchanged” from April to May, the bigger picture remains that freight volumes are still in decline. “For-hire contract freight remains in a recession,” Costello said, adding that tonnage is down 1.3% through the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This isn’t just a statistical dip, it could be a harbinger of deeper structural shifts in the freight industry. Suddenly advances in technology are being discussed less frequently versus businesses trying to pinpoint where the market, and indeed the economy is heading.

Are We Seeing a Freight Recession, Market Reset or more simply Market Confusion?

Some in the industry are now asking whether this extended period of decline reflects a cyclical freight recession or the beginning of a more fundamental market reset. The surge in capacity post-pandemic combined with a slowdown in consumer spending and tighter inventory management may be creating long-term consequences for freight demand. As retailers and manufacturers recalibrate their logistics strategies, is there a new normal for tonnage levels? At TEC we think, based on speaking to customers, business and demand are relatively healthy but a deep fog of uncertainty is flooding the market in general.

What About the Role of Spot Market vs. Contract Freight?

Another dynamic worth examining is the distinction between the spot market and contract freight. While the ATA’s tonnage index is heavily weighted toward contract freight, the spot market has been even more volatile over the past year. Smaller carriers, particularly those reliant on spot rates, have felt the pinch more acutely than large for-hire fleets. Could this environment lead to more consolidation across the trucking sector as margins tighten?

Will This Impact Driver Demand and Equipment Orders?

A softer freight environment also raises questions about capacity planning. Will carriers slow down truck and trailer purchases in the second half of 2025? What effect might this have on driver recruitment and retention, especially with driver wages having surged in recent years to attract talent? If freight volumes remain low, we may see a shift toward optimization over expansion. Capacity at this time in the expedite market seems healthy whereas summer can usually see it contract to some extent.

How Should Shippers Adapt?

Shippers may find opportunity in this cooling market at times. Linehaul rates seem to be easing. With more capacity available, contract rates could remain competitive for the foreseeable future. But will this lead to a temporary benefit or long-term savings? Logistics managers need to weigh whether this is the time to renegotiate contracts or invest in new regional and last-mile delivery models. We are seeing rates hold steady with moderate decreases for long-distance ground expedites.

What Lies Ahead?

The next few months will be critical for understanding where the freight economy is heading. Will the back half of 2025 bring a rebound, especially with hopes pinned on the holiday shipping season? Or are we in for a prolonged plateau, as inflation, interest rates, and inventory adjustments continue to weigh on freight activity? As the industry navigates these uncertainties, it’s vital to ask tough questions and monitor the signals. From carrier networks and capacity strategy to procurement and pricing models, every stakeholder in the supply chain must stay agile and informed.
The post ATA Truck Tonnage Index Slips in May – What Does It Mean for the Freight Industry? first appeared on tecexpedited.

The development of Colorado’s interstate highway system has been pivotal in shaping the state’s economic landscape, particularly in the realm of expedited freight shipping. From its inception in the mid-20th century to current and future infrastructure projects, these highways have facilitated the efficient movement of goods across the state and beyond to all points across the nation.

Historical Development

Colorado’s integration into the national Interstate Highway System began with the construction of major routes like I-25, I-70, and I-76. I-25, running north-south, connects key urban centers such as Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver, and Fort Collins. Construction of I-25 was completed in 1969, enhancing north-south connectivity within the state (CDOT).

I-70, stretching east-west, serves as a critical corridor through the Rocky Mountains. Notable engineering feats along this route include the Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which, at 11,158 feet, is the highest point on the U.S. Interstate System (Wikipedia). The completion of the Glenwood Canyon segment in 1992 marked the final link in Colorado’s interstate network (CDOT).

I-76, connecting Denver to the Nebraska state line, was fully completed in 1993, providing a vital link to I-80 and facilitating east-west freight movement (CDOT).

Current and Future Infrastructure Projects

To address increasing traffic volumes and enhance freight efficiency, Colorado has embarked on several significant infrastructure projects:

Floyd Hill Project: Initiated in 2023, this $700 million project aims to improve an 8-mile stretch of I-70 between Evergreen and Idaho Springs. The project includes adding a third lane, straightening curves, and replacing a deficient bridge (Summit Daily).

West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes: This project focuses on adding a third lane in both directions between East Vail and the top of Vail Pass. It also includes wildlife crossings and improved truck parking (I-70 Solutions).

Heartland Expressway: Part of the Ports-to-Plains Alliance, this proposed four-lane corridor aims to connect Limon, Colorado, to Rapid City, South Dakota, and support the agricultural and energy sectors (Wikipedia).

Impact on Expedited Freight Shipping

The interstate highway system is integral to Colorado’s freight transportation, with approximately 70% of all freight in the U.S. moved by trucks (CDOT). Efficient highways reduce transit times, lower transportation costs, and enhance supply chain reliability.

However, challenges persist. For instance, the I-70 corridor through the mountains is prone to closures due to weather conditions and accidents, leading to significant economic impacts. In 2017, full closures between West Vail and Golden accounted for over 33 days, primarily due to crashes and weather-related incidents.

To mitigate such issues, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is developing a comprehensive Multimodal Freight Plan. This plan aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of freight movement through infrastructure improvements and integration of multimodal transportation options.

Conclusion

Colorado’s interstate highways have been, and continue to be, vital arteries for expedited freight shipping. Ongoing and future infrastructure projects are poised to address current challenges, improve safety, and enhance the efficiency of freight transportation. As the state continues to grow, these developments will play a crucial role in supporting economic vitality and meeting the demands of modern logistics. At TEC whether you are shipping to, from or within Colorado (or across the region) we have the solutions you need for your next expedited freight shipment.

Knowing where to expect the heaviest traffic congestion
bottlenecks nationwide helps us provide the most accurate transit times for
your expedited freight. Some bottlenecks are historically always near the top
of this unenviable list but there is quite a lot of fluid competition for the top
ten locations where traffic can almost always lead to delays that can impact
shipping time negatively.

When we dispatch same day and overnight freight our carriers always strategically allow for likely congestion and will reroute accordingly dependent on the time of day they are most likely to hit known bottlenecks with your freight. After driving through the night at speed many hours of saved transit time can be quickly swallowed up sitting in traffic in known congestion hot spots.

The report itself makes for interesting and worthwhile
reading and while some of the locations you probably would expect to see on
such a list such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston there are many locations In
the top twenty that might surprise you on first reading. The top ten (bottom
ten!) are below:

1 Fort Lee, NJ: I-95 at SR 4

2 Atlanta, GA: I-285 at I-85 (North)

3 Nashville, TN: I-24/I-40 at I-440 (East)

4 Houston, TX: I-45 at I-69/US 59

5 Atlanta, GA: I-75 at I-285 (North)

6 Chicago, IL: I-290 at I-90/I-94 IL

7 Atlanta, GA: I-20 at I-285 (West)

8 Cincinnati, OH: I-71 at I-75

9 Los Angeles, CA: SR 60 at SR 57

10 Los Angeles, CA: I-710 at I-105

Texas has the most major bottlenecks nationwide weighing in
with eleven of the worst one hundred, followed by California, Georgia and New
York with seven each respectively. Atlanta alone has three of the worst ten
bottlenecks in the entire country. The data is extremely comprehensive and draws
upon GPS data from more than one million
trucks nationwide.
